4th Block Only

Welcome to Creative Writing!
Ø  Happy  Thursday!—May 9th, 2013  J

4th block:
Ø  Lovelies, I am going to be gone tomorrow, so tomorrow I am going to have you working in groups on a few things.
Ø  So today we are having a quiet revision day—a day to get several pieces ready for our portfolios.

Note:  You were to have completed your peer conference for homework.  If you did not, what message did you send to your partner?  How can you remedy this at this point?

#1:  Revise Your Sense Poem
Make at least ten revisions (not just edits) using the following questions:
1.     What words could you add (connotation vs. denotation; favorite words; words with sounds)
2.     Can you add a metaphor or simile to show comparisons?
3.     What words can you cut?  (the smell of?)
4.    How can you build a little on each line you have?
5.     How specific and crisp can you be with your description?
6.    Is your title a knockout?
7.     Does your last line add a dimension to the piece?

Ø  Share this Sense Poem with me on google, if you have not already done so.

Thing #2:  E-mail
1.      Open up and review WE#10 and #11.  I only have time to read one.
2.     E-mail me now, and tell me which one you’d rather have me read and make full comments on, please.

Thing #3:  Peer Conference
Over Ghosts, Monsters, Bullies Poem
When you reach this point, see me for a partner, then do all the following
1.      I will assign you a partner.
2.     Share your poem with that person on google docs.
3.     Carefully read your partner’s poem.
4.     Make TWO POSITIVE COMMENTS, comments that show the writer what he’s/she’s doing well.
5.     Make ONE NEGATIVE COMMENT, a comment that points out a problem the writer needs to work on.
6.     Think about this:  oftentimes a story or poem begins by answering a question.  Some questions make you want to write more than others.
7.     At the bottom of the poem, TYPE THREE QUESTIONS you have about what’s happening in the poem (the events themselves).
8.     If you can’t ask three questions, then insert more comments.
9.     Make any editing corrections (cosmetic stuff) that you see need it.

Thing #4:  Revise Your Ghosts, Monsters and Bullies Poem
Make at least fifteen revisions (not just edits) using the following questions:

Ø  25,000 Grains by Next Friday  (Make sure you’re playing in our class group.)

2.     Then it will be workshopped by your group.
3.     Your U of I writing mentor will lead the way, but you will all need to be ready to discuss in a helpful, insightful, respectful way.  So get into it.  Dig in, and make good comments.  J
4.     Your group will workshop until all poems have been read, or until your U of I person dismisses you back to class.
