Welcome to Creative Writing!

When You Come In
1.      Please initial next to your name on the clipboard.
2.     Grab a copy of the textbook (yellow) and a cover sheet (purple).
3.     Find your desk with your ORANGE (in the top middle of the desk) name sticky note on it.  Sit there.  Don’t move the nametags—please and thank you!  J
4.     Get out a blank piece of paper.

And now for a word about room temperature….

Materials
·      Note:  you will need a small three-ring binder for class.

Free Write #1
1.      Write for the full ten minutes, without stopping.
2.     Talk about any topic of your choosing.
a.     Now, let’s say you have NO idea what to write about, and your mind is a complete blank—what can you do?
b.    Let’s look at page 11:  Writing Resistance Topics.  We’re going to whip around the room, and you read one aloud when it’s your turn.
3.     Who will read this Free Write #1?
4.     How will I grade this?
a.     Start at     2:20
b.    End at       2:30
5.     To Turn It In
6.     Circle (or rectangle, or parallelogram) the following
a.     “Free Write #1
b.    Date
c.     Your Name—do you have all three?  J
7.     Pass them over to Jessica and Nichole then!  Thank you!

Begin with the End in Mind:  Final Portfolio
1.      What is it? 
·      It’s a collection of your best and brightest work—ten original pieces, written by you this term.

2.     What’s it worth?
·      15-20% of your entire term grade.

3.     Can I see some examples?
·      Sure!  J  I’m going to take you on a tour of the projects, then I’m going to let you view them independently.

4.     Should I fill anything out as I’m viewing?
·      Thank you for asking.  The answer is “yes”!  Here’s a Portfolio Viewing sheet for you!

5.     What is the procedure for this?
·      Browse all the BIG projects (non-notebooks).
·      Fill in the Portfolio Viewing handout as you go!
·      Move to a new project whenever you’re ready.

Ø  Why are we doing this, Willis?
o   So we can BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND! 
o   …so you start to get an idea of what a Portfolio is.
o   …so the seed is planted in your brain today, and you can be thinking all term about this project.

Class Discussion
1.      So, what is the Portfolio?
2.     Discuss your worksheet answers!
3.     Can we begin with the end in mind now?  J
4.     Fill in #7 and #8 together.

Homework:  Earthbook/Academic Fraud worksheet (page 7)
1.      The worksheet you need to complete is on page 7.  Fill in the pages I’m going to give you.
2.     Read the questions first (reading strategy).
3.     Read the pages listed to answer the questions and fill in the blanks.
4.     This is due when you come to class tomorrow (before the tardy bell rings).  I do not accept late work.
