Big Ideas for the Week
·       Showing, Not Just Telling
·       Diction—Have that Vocabulary Variety sheet out every day!  J
·       Days Remaining in Term 3 = 10 (not including last two days for finals)

Writing Workshop:  Simile Poem  (Brainstorming, then Typing Draft #1)                 
Preparation
1.      Create your two-column list with “=” in between each comparison.  Review our “Life = Football, 2012” file from Friday.
2.     You must have at least FIVE pairs listed before you start typing your poem.
Typing the Poem
3.     Create your Simile Poem!
a.     Minimum line length                             = 20
b.     Minimum points of comparison     = 5
4.     Print when I call time. (twenty minutes to work)

IF YOU FINISH EARLY:
1.            READ YOUR ORANGE PORTFOLIO PAGES.
2.           GO THROUGH YOUR GOOGLE DOCS PORTFOLIO FOLDER.  DO YOU HAVE AT LEAST FIVE PIECES TO START FINALIZING?
3.          START REVISING AND EDITING THOSE PIECES.

·       I’m going to read aloud  an excerpt from Eudora Welty’s “A Worn Path”.  You highlight ANY and EVERY element that SHOWS (or tells) you where the SETTING is:  place, time, environment.

Writing Workshop
Revise and/or write one more page on your short story, focusing on the following:
·       Creating a more defined character, using what we talked about today.
·       Creating a more defined setting, using what we talked about today.

Conference with Me

After Lunch—Children’s Story
Homework Due Today
·       Post-Interview Homework sheet, completed
·       One 8 ½ x 11 illustration (color)

Take your Children’s Story Envelope back to the Carpet Corner!
1.      Show your illustration, and explain its importance to your story.
2.     Show your buddy’s illustration, and explain its relevance
3.     Hold open one of our children's books from the library, and say what was appealing about the design/layout/style of each book.
4.     Keep EVERYTHING in our big envelopes--all our story material.

Writing Workshop
1.      Get to page four on your story, focusing on CHARACTER and SETTING.
2.     Complete ONE Facebook Character page for your CHILDREN’S STORY.


Homework
