READING

Reading 1st and 2nd Blocks
Most importantly, remember that we have started working on the fluency final.  We are preparing ourselves to read to Stewart students, and to ace our final.  Dedicate yourselves to today’s tasks with energy and focus.  I expect the best from you guys while you’re working with Mr. Collins.

1) Pedro (1st) and Riley (2nd)—Please hop up front and lead the class as they get out their PHRASING sheets from yesterday.  You have five minutes, maximum, to answer all the following questions in a whole-class discussion:
What are the rules for where to PHRASE something (slashes)?
What do you do when there are no rules?
Why is PHRASING important?
How will PHRASING help your listeners understand your reading?
2) Grab a Phrasing Practice--Worksheet #1 off the back table.
3) Remembering the rules, and remembering what you know about WHY PHRASING MATTERS, follow the directions, and complete the following sentences:
1
2
4
6
7
10

4) Read your book until everyone has finished the worksheet.
5) When Pedro/Riley sees everyone is done, it’s time to pair-shair.  PLEASE be nice, and make sure everyone has a partner—go in threes, if you need to.
6) Compare notes—talk about differences in where you slashed your sentences.  Make any changes you want to make to your own paper, put your name on it, then put it in the drawer.
7) Grab one children’s book off the back table for you and your partner.
8) Read the book together.
9) Talk about what would make it appealing to little kids.
10) Talk about what would NOT make it appealing to little kids.
11) Write your ideas down on the back of this sheet.
12) Trade books with another pair.
13) Repeat steps 8, 9, 10, and 11.
14) Trade books one last time.
15) Repeat steps 8, 9, 10, and 11.

Read and Relax
Grab your pink sheet!
No one is in the carpet corner today.  Stay at home.
